Types of Hot Water Boiler

High Temperature Hot Water Boilers (HTHW)

According to ASME, a High Temperature Hot Water Boiler is an ASME Section I Power Boiler and includes any boiler with a maximum temperature exceeding 250°F and/or maximum pressures exceeding 160 PSIG. In application, HTHW systems refer to those designs where the temperatures exceed 350°F.

Medium Temperature Hot Water Boilers (MTHW)

A Medium Temperature Hot Water Boiler refers to a boiler with a temperature, ranging from 250°F to 350°F, with a maximum operating pressure of 150 PSIG. This means that an MTHW system may require an ASME Section I boiler for some designs and an ASME Section IV boiler for others.

Low Temperature Hot Water Boilers (LTHW)

According to ASME Section IV, a heating boiler includes any boiler with a maximum temperature below 250°F and a maximum pressure below 160 PSIG. In application, LTHW systems refer to those designs where the temperatures are below 250°F.

Components of a Hot Water Boiler

01/

Burner: This is where the mixing of air and the fuel source happens resulting in the combustion which provides the necessary heat to heat the water.

02/

Combustion chamber: The burner creates combustion in the chamber that heats the heat exchanger.

03/

Heat Exchanger: The heat from the combustion in the chamber passes through the heat exchanger to heat the water in the tank without any direct contact.

04/

Ignition/Flame failure Control: This control initiates the ignition process on a demand from the operating control and monitors the burner flame during the trial for the ignition process during operation will shut off the fuel supply to the burner if a flame failure is detected.

05/

Operating Control: A temperature control that cycles the burner off and on or modulates the burner to maintain the temperature setting of the control.

06/

Circulating pump: The pump maintains water flow through the boiler to be heated and circulated to a variety of heating components such as convection heaters, coils in air handlers, or in-floor heating coils.

Application of Hot Water Boiler

Central heating of buildings

Hot water boilers are commonly used for space heating in residential, commercial, and office buildings through radiator and fan coil systems.

Domestic hot water heating

Boilers are responsible for supplying domestic hot water, which is used for showers, washing, and other household purposes.

Process water heating in industry

In certain industries that need water at medium or high temperatures, hot water boilers are used to heat process water.

Pools and recreation centers

Using hot water boilers for swimming pools is considered as one of the most effective methods of pool heating and is an ideal option for heating both residential and commercial pools.

FAQ

Q: What is a hot water boiler?

A: Boilers, which are full of copper tubes, are complex heating appliances that turn water into steam. They heat water rapidly for two different uses: hot water and home heating and are typically powered by electricity, natural gas, propane or heating oil.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a hot water boiler?

A: Around 20 years
But we can give you some general figures. The standard modern hot water boiler will last around 20 years, sometimes more. Older cast iron steam boilers can last longer, and may even reach 50 years—but this is rare, and you probably don't have a cast-iron steam boiler.

Q: Is it cheaper to heat a house with a boiler?

A: When it comes to costs, boilers are typically more expensive to install but run more efficiently, potentially leading to cost savings in the long run. As for lifespan, the average lifespan of many boilers is around 15 years.

Q: Is a boiler better than a water heater?

A: The efficiency of a water heater or boiler depends on the type of unit and how it is being used. Water heaters are much more energy-efficient than boilers, and tankless water heaters are even more efficient and sustainable than those with tanks.

Q: Can you get hot water without a boiler?

A: In a home without a boiler, water can be heated using one or more immersion heaters, often one at the top and one at the bottom of the cylinder. This applies to homes with electric storage heaters.

Q: Can I use a tankless water heater as a boiler?

A: The answer is, you can. However, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It's true that a tankless water heater can easily heat most single-family homes. It's also true that a tankless water heater is smaller and less expensive than a boiler or a furnace.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a boiler?

A: 15 years
For an average household, boilers can last up to 15 years or more depending on regular maintenance and servicing. Though it's important to understand this timespan is conditional.

Q: What is the difference between a steam boiler and a hot water boiler?

A: Hot water heating recirculates water through a loop. It needs a boiler or heat exchanger in order to bring the water up to temperature for heating purposes. Conversely, in a steam system, the water is evaporated through a boiler to produce heat.

Q: Can you run out of hot water with a boiler?

A: Running out of hot water, especially during winter, can be a nightmare. Standard or system boilers may struggle to keep up with high demand, resulting in sporadic shortages because they heat a large volume of water stored in a tank. When this tank empties, it takes time to refill and reheat the water.

Q: Do water boilers use a lot of electricity?

A: In fact, the Department of Energy states that water heating is the second-largest utility cost behind space heating and cooling, accounting for roughly 18% of your monthly bill.
